Organic Plant Disease Treatments That Actually Work (and Which Don't)

Organic does not automatically mean safe or effective. Some organic sprays match conventional fungicides on powdery mildew; others perform no better than water. Here is what peer-reviewed research supports — and what to skip.

Proven organic tools

  • Potassium bicarbonate (5 g/L) — matches conventional fungicides against powdery mildew in university trials.
  • Copper hydroxide / octanoate — broad-spectrum against bacterial and fungal diseases; rotate to avoid soil copper buildup.
  • Neem oil (1%) — suppresses aphids, whiteflies, spider mites; mild antifungal activity against powdery mildew.
  • Bacillus subtilis (QST 713) — biological fungicide with strong data on Botrytis and powdery mildew.
  • Sulfur — the oldest fungicide still working; effective on mildews and rusts. Do not apply above 30 °C or within 2 weeks of oil sprays.

Marginal or unproven

  • Milk sprays (1:10 dilution) — some effect on powdery mildew; inconsistent between crops.
  • Garlic and chili extracts — folk remedies; little peer-reviewed evidence at practical doses.
  • Compost tea — variable microbial content; treat as fertilizer, not fungicide.
  • Baking soda alone — inferior to potassium bicarbonate; can accumulate sodium in soil.

Application rules that decide success

Organic sprays are almost all contact fungicides — they only work where they land. Spray both leaf surfaces, add a wetting agent (0.05% mild soap), and repeat every 7 days during outbreak. Apply early morning or late afternoon to avoid leaf burn and to protect pollinators.
